Stafford is the county town of Staffordshire in England. It lies in the north of the West Midlands region, between Wolverhampton and Stoke-on-Trent.

Stafford is famous for its Ancient High House, Izaak Walton's cottage and Stafford Castle.

There has been a permanent settlement in the Stafford area since around 900-700bc. The 18th century saw Stafford develop as a town of trade and production. A minor pottery industry had developed and a much larger shoe industry flourished. The shoe industry dominated Stafford's industry until the late 19th century and put Stafford on the map as a major Town in England.

The 20th century saw Stafford move into the modern era. As the traditional shoe industries died, new and more large-scale industries moved in. These included large scale electrical companies, glue manufacturers, steam industries and wood yards. During the second world war a Stafford company produced tanks and shortly after a large scale munitions and storage yard was setup for the military.

Through the 60's,70's and early 80's the inner group of industries declined and the sites they once occupied were converted to housing or commercial premises. Newer and more up market industries moved into the new "industrial estates" which attracted a whole new type of industry and person to Stafford. New housing projects and more industrial estates cropped up and the town expanded rapidly.

Over the past decade the town developed a technology and entertainment industry whilst maintaining it's core manufacturing industries. The polytechnic was given University status and a new hospital was built in the east of the town.

Stone

Stone is an old market town in Staffordshire, situated about seven miles north of Stafford, and around seven miles south of the city of Stoke-on-Trent. It is the second town, after Stafford, in the Borough of Stafford.

Stone stands in the valley of the River Trent, and was an important stopping-off point for the coaches on one of the roads turnpiked in the 18th century.

The River Trent, which runs through the town, had been used for cargo-carrying vessels since Roman times and the Trent & Mersey Canal offered an efficient way to bring raw materials to the potteries and to transport finished wares.

The coming of the railway was to end Stone’s era as a coaching and canal town. The North Staffordshire Railway opened its main line from Stoke on Trent through Stone to Norton Bridge on 3 April 1848; the following year a branch line from Stone to Colwich began operating.

The town is not currently served by train services following the West Coast Mainline speed upgrade, but there will be an hourly semi-fast direct service to London Euston from January 2009.

Today there are two trunk roads, the A34 linking Birmingham to Manchester and the A51 linking Lichfield to Chester. Stone is by-passed by the M6 motorway.
