Esme Wright, one of our highly trained Advice and Support officers spotted that Joan and Maurice could take advantage of a host of extra income opportunities. Her experience and support resulted in a carefree retirement, making all the difference to the delighted couple.
With our support, Joan applied for a Disabled Facilities Grant to fund a new bathroom. Whilst helping with the application we also looked into updating the couple’s finances. It was important to make sure they we’re receiving exactly what they we’re entitled to. As it’s difficult for anyone to keep abreast of the changing policies an expert dedicated to the matter is the best help we can provide.
A couple of quick calculations revealed some fantastic news. The couple were both eligible for Housing Benefit and not only that, it could be backdated for a whole year, which meant besides a lovely rent refund, all their future payments would be supplemented too. It was a nice surprise for the couple who say, “We can’t thank the Housing Association enough. We really appreciate their help and feel very lucky that they were there for us. Esme was brilliant at organising it all.”
The good luck didn’t end there though. The Advice and Support team also realised that both Joan and Maurice were eligible for Attendance Allowance too. This really boosted their weekly income and really changed their lives.
Maurice adds, “It’s given us more comfort and it’s the little things that make the difference. If we want it, we can have it now. We can do things we couldn’t afford to do before. They’ve been brilliant. No two ways about it.”
Esme Wright, their Advice and Support Officer says, "There’s lots of people in that situation. They just don’t realise these things are out there for them and many don’t think to ask. This change has made a phenomenal difference to Joan and Maurice. It’s lovely to see and makes this a really rewarding job".
