A South Staffordshire football team is celebrating a hat-trick of successes after it scooped two titles and another year of sponsorship.
Wheaton Aston Wanderers are celebrating winning the first division in the Staffordshire & District Sunday League to gain a place in the premiership, as well as winning the league one challenge cup and securing a fifth year of sponsorship from South Staffordshire Housing Association (SSHA).
The team has climbed over four consecutive seasons from division four of the Sunday League to the premiership division.
To add to the celebrations, the team scooped an end of season win to take home the league one challenge cup on Friday, May 18, defeating Seighford 4-1 in front of more than 100 spectators at Rowley Park, Stafford.
The Sunday League team was able to play its cup final match wearing the new kit and is donating its old kit with the help of charity African Cargo.
For the third year, the team is donating its old black and white kits to a team from a Zambian orphanage, and it is the third year that the team has made the donation.
Alun Watts, manager of Wheaton Aston Wanderers, said: “This has been an incredible season for the team, we hoped to ‘hold our own’ after being promoted to from division two last season but has surpassed our expectations by winning the league again and I am very proud of how committed they have been to the success of the club.
“We really value the sponsorship we receive from South Staffordshire Housing Association. It enabled us to kit out the team in a professional strip, and this helps with the team’s moral, as demonstrated by the cup final result.
“We have built up links with African Cargo over the last couple of years and we are pleased that we can continue to make a community donation that will benefit another football team on another part of the globe.”
Jan Goode, director of customer services at SSHA, said: “We are delighted to sponsor Wheaton Aston Wanderers as they go from strength to strength. It is a pleasure to continue to be a part of their success.
“SSHA is committed to supporting and strengthening community groups through our sponsorship grants, which are set aside to benefit projects and initiatives in the areas that we serve.
“The fact that they have also been proactive in forging links with disadvantaged children in Zambia helps the donation to go so much further, and we are proud that the South Staffordshire name is being displayed on football pitches both here and in Africa.”
