A Staffordshire based housing association has today waged a campaign to change the perception of social housing, following a morning rant by Radio 2’s Chris Evans.
SSHA, a housing association that manages over 5000 homes for rent and shared ownership across the region took offence to the DJs comments about social housing following the breakfast show on Wednesday morning where Evans described the design of affordable housing as ‘uninspiring’, ‘soul-destroying’ and ‘spiritless’.
Jan Goode, director of customer services at SSHA explains;
“Chris Evans clearly isn’t in touch with modern social housing as his comment is totally out-dated. Yes, in years gone by social housing design wasn’t great but times have changed and nowadays planners, communities and customers alike demand better design that compliments our towns and villages.”
The association has challenged Evans to visit one of its bespoke developments in the village of Swindon near Wolverhampton. Here the Association worked with the local conservation officer to individually design 14 homes using intricate design features from the villages existing buildings; taking inspiration from a listed manor house, traditional barn and the village pub! The homes launched by local MP Gavin Williamson in January are fully occupied either for rent or shared ownership.
