MP opens showhome at rural affordable housing development

South Staffordshire MP Gavin Williamson was one of the first people to step through the doors of a newly completed showhome on a £2.6million rural affordable housing development.

Would-be residents in Essington are being given a glimpse into the future with the opening of a showhome at Park Close in the village.

The doors have been opened to the first affordable home at Park Close, which is a development of 35 homes for affordable rent and shared ownership for local people looking to stay living in the village but might otherwise be priced out of the area.

Gavin Williamson MP was one of the first to be given a sneak preview of the new affordable homes, which have been built by Staffordshire-based Housing Plus, thanks to £2.1million of funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

Gavin Williamson MP said: “It is fantastic to see this development taking shape.  It is so important to get affordable homes in our rural villages for both young and old.  I was really impressed with the high quality of the houses and I am quite sure they will prove to be popular homes for many in Essington.”

Of the 35 affordable homes, nine are for shared ownership to give local people an opportunity to get a foot on to the housing ladder and 26 homes for affordable rent have been reserved for people with strong work or family connections to the area but are unable to live locally due to the shortage of affordable homes to rent. The homes will be managed by South Staffordshire Housing Association.

Ursula Bennion, director of business development at Housing Plus, said: “Feedback from the local community showed that there was a real demand for affordable housing in Essington. We have developed the site in a way to gain maximum benefit and provide for a variety of housing needs. There is a mix of properties available for affordable rent and shared ownership.”

The development includes two, three and four-bedroom homes and a two-bedroom bungalow, specifically for people aged over 55, available for affordable rent. Nine two-bedroom homes are also available for shared ownership.

The price for the shared ownership homes starts from £55,000 for a 40 per cent share of a two-bedroom house.
