New £3.5m Development For Shifnal’s Over-55’s Opens Its Doors

A new over-55’s officially opened in Shifnal this week (Tuesday 7 December) by Shropshire Council’s Councillor Simon Jones, portfolio holder for adult services and Councillor Roger Evans, member champion for affordable housing as well as Rolf Levesley chair of South Staffordshire Housing Association (SSHA).

The state-of-the-art £3.5 million development, that is available either to rent or as shared ownership, is built on the site of a former supported living bedsit scheme of the same name. The new Yew Tree Court features 30 two bedroom apartments and three one and two bedroom bungalows, all of which include a private kitchen, lounge, wet-room style bathroom as well as residents lounge for socialising.

Speaking at the opening event, Rolf Levesley explained: “The important thing about this development is the mix of comfortable private living space, where residents can close their front door and enjoy the benefits of a modern apartment and the communal space where residents can enjoy each others company, combating the isolation that so many older people feel. It really does provide a home for life.”

While giving residents their independence, the development has also been designed to provide the support that they may need either now or in the future. Flexible care is available that is tailored to individual needs and a call system, assisted living technology as well as a concierge service all help to give peace of mind.

Cllr. Simon Jones comments: “Yew Tree Court is a fantastic living space for the over 55’s in the Shifnal area. This modern scheme is a vision of what life should be like in later life, comfortable surroundings and independent living with support right on your doorstep. I’m delighted to be involved in its launch and know it’ll make a wonderful home for people in the future.”

Rolf concludes: “This is a very proud day for our organisation as we continue to work proactively with partners in Shropshire to develop much needed affordable homes and independent living schemes like Yew Tree Court for local people. In fact Yew Tree Court is the fifth development we have now completed in partnership with the local authority in Shropshire and we hope this strengthening relationship will continue to grow over time.

The scheme, on The Grove in Shifnal, includes seven apartments for part-buy part rent and the remaining 26 for rent. Anyone interested in renting or part buy part rent should call SSHA on 0800 096 8690.
