SSHA Supports Local Police with its Knockout Boxing Club

South Staffordshire Housing Association (SSHA) is fighting the corner of Wombourne Boxing Club, by making a knockout donation to help it get up and running.

The club, established by Staffordshire Police, aims to teach youngsters between the ages of 5 and 16 the skills required to be a boxer, as well as fitness, discipline and focus.

The children, currently learning non-contact boxing, are taught by police officers Paula Wilks, Garry Helsby and Wayne Green, along with volunteers from the area. Divided into two classes, one on Friday evenings for 11 to 17 year olds and the other on Saturday afternoons for five to 10 year olds, the budding boxers strive to gain medals and certificates in recognition of their new skills.

The £500 donated by SSHA went towards the equipment needed, such as punch bags, gloves and safety mats and the weekly subs money, £2 per child, will go towards the running of the club.

Jan Goode, director of customer services at SSHA comments: “Clubs like this help hold our communities together by keeping local youngsters busy and giving them focus. We work very closely with the police to develop and enhance the lives of the region’s young people and are always supportive of great initiatives like this.”

PC Wayne Green explains: “Kids between the age of 5 and 16 often have excess energy and unless it is channelled into a good cause, can often lead to anti-social behaviour. We only launched in September but already we have a great bunch of kids that attend each week and are really developing their boxing skills.”

Held at Ounsdale High School in Wombourne, the club is currently looking for premises to become a permanent boxing club, but is struggling to find the right location.

PC Green explains: “The support we have been given is overwhelming and we’d like to thank SSHA for its donation. However, what we’d like to achieve next is to have our own premises; a place that the youngsters can call their own. If anyone knows of anywhere we can use, we urge them to get in touch.”
