A housing association’s community donation has proved a win-win for football teams both home and away.
South Staffordshire Housing Association, part of the Housing Plus group, has sponsored Wheaton Aston Wanderers for the last four years as part of a dedicated community fund.
With the Sunday-league team about to begin the new season in a new kit, it decided to recycle its two previous kits with the help of charity African Cargo.
The black and white kits have since been proudly worn by two teams from a Zambian orphanage, in a tournament put on for 340 local people including orphans and street children.
Alun Watts, manager of Wheaton Aston Wanderers, said: “We really value the sponsorship we receive from South Staffordshire Housing Association. It enabled us to kit out the team in a professional strip, and to be able to start this season in a new kit is a real boost.
“I came across African Cargo through a friend and thought it would be a wonderful way of keeping the community spirited donation going, with a global reach. I think being twinned with two teams in Africa must be a first for a Sunday league side.”
Wheaton Aston Wanderers are now in their sixth season and have progressed from division five to division two of the Stafford and District League after winning Division 3 last season.
Jan Goode, Director of Customer Services at South Staffordshire Housing Association, said: “Our community sponsorship is set aside to benefit projects and initiatives in the areas that we serve. It is all part of our commitment to strengthening communities.
“We are delighted to continue to support Wheaton Aston Wanderers as they go from strength to strength.
“The fact that they have also been proactive in forging links with disadvantaged children in Zambia helps the donation to go so much further, and we are proud that the South Staffordshire name is being displayed on football pitches both here and in Africa.”
