Free workshop on-song for dementia support

A series of free music workshops for people with dementia and their carers launches this week

The Songs for You sessions will take place throughout South Staffordshire this summer, beginning with an afternoon of song, friendship and support in Perton on Friday.

The Songs for You workshops are led by professional musicians from Arts for Health, with friendly staff and volunteers to help and support. Participants sing familiar songs and learn some new ones but as Yvette Tompkins of hosts Care Plus explained, they are just as important in providing time out for people with dementia and those who care for them:

“Come along to meet new friends, take a break. Sing, enjoy the music then take time out to chat over tea and cake,” she urged. “We often find that music stimulates people with dementia to share memories of their past and there is no pressure to sing – join in as much or as little as you like.”

The Songs for You workshops will be taking place at easy-to-reach locations throughout the region. They get underway at 2.30pm on Friday 5 June at Corsers Court, Waveney Avenue, Perton. Entrance is free and everyone is welcome.
