SSHA switches on cost and emissions savings with new e-cars

E-cars set to reduce emissions and save housing association money

SSHA has taken delivery of a fleet of electric cars to reduce pollution and make savings for re-investing in services to its customers.

“We have been testing five e-cars over the past month with very positive results and a great reaction from the staff who have been driving them," said Director of Property Services Stephen Collins. “The fleet of Renault Zoe electric cars being handed over today will be used by our staff including housing officers, advisers, property care and other staff when they visit customers across South Staffordshire.

“We’re very grateful for the support of our business partner Vaillant in this innovative project. We believe that the electric cars will make significant savings to our travel costs which we can reinvest in improving services to customers. The reduction in emissions from the electric cars will also contribute to our Green Matters agenda by reducing our impact on the environment.”

The project has been supported by heating systems supplier Vaillant who supply the energy-efficient central heating boilers that SSHA installs in its homes. Last year SSHA installed more than 400 new boilers saving each customer an average £300 in energy costs.

Alice Woolley, Vaillant Specification Sales Director commented: “As a sustainable manufacturer, Vaillant are pleased to share these values by supporting the e-car project with SSHA. It’s a good example of how we can work together to provide a high level of service to tenants whilst making efficiencies in the way we work. The cars will enable SSHA staff to provide a cost effective service to tenants whilst reducing the impact on the environment through reduced emissions.”

Lower pollution and big savings

The Renault Zoe cars supplied by e-car have a range of 70-90 miles and can fully charge in 30 minutes. The environmental and cost benefits over conventional petrol or diesel vehicles include:

  • No carbon dioxide emissions in use, and hence less climate change
  • No other pollution in use (such as nitrogen oxides, particulates, and carbon monoxide)
  • Quiet, smooth driving experience with improved acceleration and performance than an equivalent internal combustion engine (ICE) car
  • Brand new, high-spec vehicles with a 5-star NCAP safety rating
  • Up to 80% cheaper to run

Chris Morris, Co-Founder and Managing Director of E-Car Club commented: “We are delighted to provide SSHA with these vehicles, adding to our nationwide fleet of fully-electric cars and vans. This is the first scheme we have deployed in conjunction with our partners at Vaillant and will allow us to make shared electric vehicles available for staff use in the evenings and at weekends for a highly subsidised rate – proving that our low-cost, shared usage model is transferrable across many different scenarios.”
